Application Procedure

Please contact Dr Irene Mosca, the departmental PhD Coordinator and Director of Research.

You should include your university transcripts with your email. If you have a clear idea of the research area that’s of interest to you, you should state that in your email. If you have a research proposal, you should include it. If there is a particular member of our department with whom you would be interested in working, you should mention that.

Please note that PhD admission at MU requires you to submit a research proposal that a member of department is willing to supervise. However, we are willing to work with excellent potential applicants who don’t yet have a well-developed research idea or a specific member of our department with whom they would like to work.

Please do not contact any member of department other than Dr Mosca. She will check your eligibility for entry to our PhD programme and, if so, will advise on matching you with one or more potential supervisors.

If you are applying for a scholarship please contact Dr Mosca at least four weeks before the deadline to allow time to discuss who might be a suitable supervisor, and to allow that potential supervisor to give feedback on your research proposal.

Once Dr Mosca is satisfied with your application – comprising both your transcripts and your research proposal – you will be asked to enter the details on the university’s application website in order to facilitate the university’s registration process. Please do not make a formal application until Dr Mosca has asked you to.

Admission Criteria

We seek applicants with an excellent academic background in Economics – typically with at least a high 2.1 (or equivalent) in undergraduate and master’s degrees in Economics. As well as excellent overall grades, we require high grades in the core Economics modules of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Quants/Econometrics.

However, while evidence of high ability is a necessary condition for acceptance onto our PhD programme, it is not sufficient. We must also be convinced that we can supervise you effectively. Dr. Mosca will manage the process of matching you with a potential primary supervisor. If no suitable supervisor can be found, we cannot accept you to our programme.
