Risk Assessment
Female staff should inform Human Resources as soon as they become aware that they are pregnant and provide confirmation from a doctor or midwife, if requested. When the University receives notification that an employee is pregnant a risk assessment will be carried out to ensure the safety of the staff member.
Eyesight testing for VDU Users
All new staff who work with VDUs are entitled to an VDU Eye Screening Test. VDU Eye Screening tests are then available every 3 years to VDU users.
Should a staff member wish to avail of this service please advise the Health & Safety Office before making an appointment.

Where glasses are required for VDU use the cost of standard lenses only may be paid by the Health & Safety Office and €32 may be paid towards the cost of frames. The Health & Safety office must receive VDU Eye Screening Test completed by your Optician before any payment is made. Pay the optician directly and claim a refund of allowable expenses from this office. Please complete the on line expenses form attaching scanned copies of paid receipt and completed opticians approval form. This scheme does not cover the cost of bi-focals, varifocals, coatings, etc.
ORIGINAL RECEIPTS MUST BE MAINTAINED ON FILE. THE BURSARS OFFICE WILL NOT ACCEPT CREDIT/DEBIT CARD RECEIPTS AS PROOF OF PAYMENT.
DSE Workstation Assessment
To complete a Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Workstation Assessment the following steps should be completed;
- Watch the DSE safety Video: iProtectU - Video Training
- Complete the DSE Safety Video quiz: iProtectU Compliance
- A DSE self assessment of your workspace can then be completed through iProetctU: iProtectU Compliance It is advisable to email Health and Safety to advise the Health and Safety Office that a DSE self assessment has been completed. The health and safety office will then review the assessment and will revert back to you with any comments or questions.
An employee can request a DSE assessment to be completed of their workstation by a member of the health and safety office. Please email Health and Safety to request this.
An employee with existing physical issues may require a more indepth DSE assessment to be completed by an external specialist such as a physiotherapist. Similarly, please email Health and Safety to request this.

The health and safety office have developed guidance documents that should be adhered to by departments. These guidance documents are available in iProtectU under the “Procedures” section: iProtectU Compliance
These guidance documents are reviewed on an annual basis and are updated as required. Furthermore, new guidance documents will be added as required and departments will be advised of any additions where required.
