In his new book, Dr Green argues that states arise under contemporary international law only when two abstract conditions are fulfilled. First, emerging states must constitute 'genuine political communities': collectives within which particular kinds of ethically valuable behaviour are possible. Second, such communities must emerge in a manner consistent with the ethical importance of individual political action. Dr Green integrates legal and political philosophy with international legal scholarship to propose a novel account of a central and contested question in contemporary international law.

In this symposium, Dr Green will discuss his book with three experts in legal philosophy and international law: Dr Conor Crummey, Dr Gurkan Capar and Dr Sahara Nankan.
