Dr Cian Ó Concubhair, Assistant Professor in the School of Law and Criminology, spoke with Maeve McTaggart from Irish Independent about how the different political parties have treated drug policy in their General Election 2024 manifestos. The article entitled “Election 2024: Here’s how the parties compare in the debate on drugs and decriminalisation” was published on the 28th November, the day before the nation went to the polls
“Dr Cian Ó Concubhair, an assistant professor in criminal justice at Maynooth University, said the reaction of Fine Gael to the Fianna Fáil proposals on drug policy was “surprising” considering there had been a broad acceptance of the recommendations of the cross-party Committee on Drug Use.
Meanwhile, the Sinn Féin manifesto was “completely silent on drug policy” despite previously publishing a standalone addiction and recovery strategy and voicing support for the Citizen’s Assembly.”
