
On 16 October, Dr Cormac Behan gave the opening keynote address at the Montreal International Conference on Education in Prison. Delivered online, Cormac’s address was on ‘The Transformative Power of Education in Prison: Rights, Challenges and Opportunities’.
The conference brought together a wide variety of international academics, educators and civil society organisations. It showcased research on a extensive range of themes related to education in prison, including Libraries and the Prison Environment; Indigenous Peoples and Decolonization; Art, Agency and Decarceration; Education not Incarceration; Accessibility and Digital Literacy in Prisons. Dr Cormac Behan is a lecturer in criminology at the School of Law and Criminology. He has written widely on education in prison and was commissioned to prepare a review of prison education internationally by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning which is available here.
