In the 2022/2023 academic year, the Maynooth Law Society launched an inspiring initiative to tackle period poverty on campus. Championed by Ebere Edeh, who served as the Diversity and Inclusion Officer, the campaign emerged from a pressing need for accessible sanitary products. Recognising this gap, Ebere’s vision was brought to life with the support of key committee members, including Sneha Thomas and Hira Khan, who proactively engaged prominent Dublin law firms to secure sponsorship.
Collaboration was central to the campaign’s success. Partnering with the Maynooth University Students' Union, the team ensured that period products reached every corner of campus. The initiative resonated deeply within the Maynooth community, drawing enthusiastic support from both students and staff. Local businesses, such as The Roost and Brady’s, extended their solidarity and support. Brady’s generously contributing €400 to further the cause, enabling the campaign to expand its reach beyond campus borders and to some secondary schools.
Building on this early success, the 2023/2024 Maynooth Law Society relaunched the Period Poverty Campaign in November 2024. The relaunch featured a dynamic panel discussion on period poverty, women’s health, and overall well-being, with Dr. Monica Peres Oikeh as the keynote speaker and chaired by Omasan Ayavoro, who acted as Diversity and Inclusion Officer. Alongside these engaging discussions, a fundraiser was held for the Marie Keating Foundation, supporting families facing significant health challenges.
The impact of the campaign continued to ripple across the community. In February 2024, Maynooth Healthy Campus invited Ebere and Omasan to discuss the new campus-wide Period Dignity campaign, a university-funded initiative born from persistent advocacy from members of the Maynooth Law Society. At this event, the sustainable products from We are Reily were introduced, marking a significant milestone in ensuring long-term access to sanitary products on campus. The persistent efforts and innovative spirit of the Maynooth Law Society have not only raised awareness about period poverty on campus but have also laid a strong foundation for equality and inclusivity within the community.
