My time as a student ambassador at Maynooth University was definitely a highlight of my university experience! I had the fantastic opportunity to work with the social media team, where I got to be creative by making fun and informative videos, running lively Q&A sessions, and connecting with prospective students during open days. It was so rewarding to share my journey, give advice, and offer a glimpse into life at Maynooth. Whether it was behind the camera or talking to future students, it felt amazing to be part of such an exciting, positive team and to help others envision their own potential at the university
My experience at Maynooth University was unique because it truly allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, especially in my role as a student ambassador. Living on campus made it feel like my home, and as the years went by, my love for the town grew deeper. There’s a warmth to the campus that I’ve never felt at other colleges I’ve visited. The sense of community at Maynooth is unmatched—from the welcoming atmosphere of the Students’ Union to the supportive environment in the lecture halls. It’s this strong sense of belonging and connection that made my time there so special and unforgettable
These skills have proven incredibly beneficial in my current studies for my Master's in Primary Teaching with Hibernia College. The time management strategies I developed while balancing university life now help me stay organized as I navigate assignments, lectures, and practical teaching experiences. Additionally, the interpersonal skills I gained through making connections with peers and tutors have enhanced my ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and build strong relationships with students
My advice to anyone thinking of pursuing a degree at Maynooth University would be to embrace the opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom. The university offers a welcoming and vibrant community, so don’t hesitate to join societies or take part in activities like the student ambassador program. It will really enhance your experience. Don’t worry too much about the future; easier said than done, but everything will go according to plan if you let it. Everyone is in the same boat, so don’t feel like the odd one out. Nobody has it all figured out, but you will along the way. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The university offers so many services for personal and academic support, so take advantage of them. Get involved, enjoy every day, and make the most of every opportunity. A difficult assignment is a chance to improve your essay writing skills, financial struggles are an opportunity to learn how to budget, and missing deadlines is a chance to work on time management. Every experience, whether good or bad, is a chance to grow and improve yourself. Even though there were tough times during my time at Maynooth, I often find myself thinking about how I would love to experience those days all over again. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. The challenges I faced only made me appreciate the whole experience more, and I cherish every moment I spent there. Enjoy the journey, trust the process, and know that everything will come together!

What does your current role involve?
My current role involves being enrolled in Hibernia College, where I’m working towards my Master’s in Primary Teaching. As part of this, I’m developing my teaching skills and knowledge through academic coursework and practical experiences. I’m also preparing for exciting opportunities in Gaelscoileanna, where I aim to teach in an immersive Irish-language environment. This role is all about honing my abilities to support young learners, foster a love of learning, and promote the Irish language in the classroom. It’s a rewarding journey that’s helping me grow both personally and professionally as I move closer to my career goals.
What do you find most interesting/challenging about your job?
The most interesting part of my job is the opportunity to teach in an immersive Irish-language environment. It’s incredibly rewarding to see students engaging with the language in a meaningful way and watching their language skills grow. The challenge lies in balancing the academic aspects of my coursework with practical teaching experiences while continuing to deepen my understanding of the Irish language. It can be tough to juggle these responsibilities, but it’s also what keeps me motivated. Additionally, working in a Gaelscoil presents the challenge of adapting teaching methods to best support students in both Irish and English, which is a dynamic and enriching part of the role.
How did you find your current job?
I found my current job in the Gaelscoil by putting myself out there and proactively contacting schools. This approach has paid off, as now I have schools around Athlone reaching out to me for consistent substitute teaching work. It’s been a rewarding experience, as it not only allows me to gain more hands-on teaching experience but also gives me the opportunity to work in various schools and expand my network within the local education community.
What advice would you give to Maynooth University students entering the job market, either generally speaking or in regard to your specific career sector?
My advice to Maynooth University students entering the job market would be to take a proactive approach, just as I did when I was starting out. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—reach out directly to principals and schools. Even if there’s no advertised position, always call in and make an appointment for an interview. Schools get countless calls and emails every week, so taking the time to stand out in person shows initiative and helps you make a lasting impression. This strategy worked for me, and now I have schools around Athlone contacting me for consistent substitute teaching work. Be flexible and open minded; you may not land your ideal position immediately, but each experience will help you grow professionally. For those entering the teaching sector, getting involved in schools, whether through substitute work or volunteering, is a great way to build experience and expand your network. Finally, keep learning and stay committed to your development. Every step, even the tough ones, will bring you closer to your goals.
