Dr Michael Hayden, Assistant Professor of Accounting in the School of Business at Maynooth University, recently published an article on RTE Brainstorm called “Can farmers balance economic and environmental sustainability?”. The article outlines the importance of farmers focusing on both economic and environmental sustainability when managing their farm enterprise. Given the increased focus on agriculture emissions in the battle against climate change and the vulnerable financial performance of many farm enterprises the challenge for farmers is to adapt their work practices to balance economic and environmental sustainability. Farmers need to engage with agricultural advisory services and rural accountants to explore how farm practices can change to meet this dual agenda and thereby create sustainable farm enterprises that will contribute to a sustainable food supply.
