In addition to the structured PhD progeramme, the Department also offers a four-year Doctorate in Social Science (DSocSc). The next DSocSc intake will be late 2022/early 2023.

This is a one year full-time, or two year part-time academic progression programme for students who hold the HDCYW, or the DCYW and BA Applied Social Studies, and who also have post qualifying professional experience. In exceptional circumstances graduates from equivalent programmes, who are engaged in community or youth work will be considered. To facilitate students the programme is delivered in two/three day blocks at Maynooth University every four to six weeks. The MA Applied Social Studies offers a unique opportunity for experienced practitioners to deepen their professional knowledge and academic analysis, as well as to contribute through their research and essays to the discourse of our disciplines.
The MSocSc (Rights and Social Policy) provides advanced study in key social policy issues.
It provides an opportunity for critical study in the application of social policy theory and techniques to current policy and practice.
The emphasis is on themes of rights, recognition and redistribution and associated equality, governance, justice and ageing issues.
The programme takes place over one year full-time or two years part-time.

The Master of Social Science (Social Work) (MSocSc Social Work) is a full time two year programme for suitable graduates who want to pursue a career in social work. The programme combines rigorous academic education with supervised field work practice towards the aim of developing competent, ethical and reflective social work practitioners who are committed to the promotion of human rights and social justice in social work.

Research proposals in writing are invited, and candidates should submit their academic record and a brief outline of the proposed work, and consult with the Department. Research areas of interest include, youth affairs, youth work and the sociology of youth work, community development and community work, the Welfare State, European social policy, poverty, juvenile justice and policy in respect of children, women's studies, race, racism, ethnicity, Traveller culture, and intercultural studies.
Doctor of Social Scienc (DSocSc)e: The four-year DSocSc builds on the successful professional programmes of education and traning in youth work, community work and social work. It contributes to the Department’s mission to “contribute to human rights, social justice and equality nationally and internationally’’. The programme will be seeking applicants in late 2022/early 2023.
