Prof. Fiona M. Palmer presented a paper in Finland last week on the conducting business. She spoke at the 7th Sibelius Academy Symposium on Music History (5-7 June 2024), an international conference, held in Helsinki’s state-of-the-art Music Centre. Fiona’s paper ‘Commodifying Orchestral Conductors in 1920s Britain: Conductor Medleys as a Marketplace Microcosm?’ drew on her current monograph project, under contract with Boydell Press, and took conductor medley formats as a lens through which to interpret shifts in the commodification of foreign and home-grown orchestral conductors in the 1920s.
