Examination Accommodations

Some students need support when taking examinations.

If you think you will need examination support you should talk to your Disability Advisor as early as possible. Your Disability Advisor will assess your needs and you will receive a Learning and Academic Needs Report outlining the supports that will be provided in university, including reasonable accommodations for examinations. Some examination supports which may be available to you, depending on your needs, are:

Extra time
Smaller rooms
Use of a computer or assistive technology
Rest breaks, including food and/ or medication breaks
Special equipment – for example a special keyboard, mouse/ pointing device, or chair
A reader to help the student read the paper
A scribe to write for the student

Closing Dates for Examination Accommodations

Students should make requests for examination support as early as possible in the academic year. To ensure the Examinations Office can provide your accommodations students must have registered with the Disability Office and requested examination supports by the following dates:

Semester 1 Examinations - First Friday in November
Semester 2 Examinations - First Friday in March
Repeat Examinations - First Friday in March

Students registering with the Disability Office after these deadline dates will be accommodated in subsequent examinations.

Venues for Examination Accommodations

Students who are granted examination accommodations take their examinations in smaller or separate venues and NOT in the main examination hall. There is no option to sit some examinations in the main examination hall.

Students who have been granted a computer and/ or assistive technology take their examinations in Long Corridor on the South Campus.
Students who have been granted other types of accommodations take their examinations in the John Hume Building on the North Campus.

Day of the Examination

On the day of the examination students should arrive early at the examination venue and familiarise themselves with the examination venue set up.
There will be invigilators present who will direct students to the specific room/ building where they will be sitting their examination.
Invigilators will check each student's MyCard student ID in the examination venue.
The invigilators will also answer any questions students may have.

In-Class Assessments

Supports for in-class assessments are organised by your academic department and NOT the Examinations Office.
When you register with the Disability Office your academic department is notified that you have a disability and asked to provide accommodations for in-class assessments if you ask them to do so.
If you wish to avail of accommodations for in-course assessments you should contact the relevant academic departments directly and give at least two weeks’ notice.

Examination Tips

Do not leave arranging your examination accommodations until the last minute – you risk missing out on having these implemented in time for your examinations and/ or assessment. Remember that the closing dates to apply for examination supports are strictly applied by the Disability Office.
The examination accommodations granted to you will have been outlined in your Learning and Academic Needs Report. You will receive a copy of this from the Disability Office.
If you have been granted the use of a reader, scribe or PC you must complete training to ensure that you are comfortable and competent using these supports. It is the responsibility of the student to access this support.
Read your course/ subject outline carefully, noting the assessment requirements and dates for in-course tests and assessments.
Consider your exam accommodations requirements in light of the assessment requirements – not all exam accommodations will be required for all assessments.
Remember that you must give your academic department a minimum of two weeks’ notice if you require examination accommodations for in-class assessments.
Remember that if you are granted examination support that you will not be taking your examinations in the main hall with other students. You will be taking all of your examinations in a smaller or separate venue.
