The MSc in Robotics and Embedded AI at Maynooth University equips graduates from computing, engineering, and related disciplines with specialized expertise in designing and controlling intelligent machines. This multidisciplinary program blends computing, electronics, and mechanical engineering to address the complex challenges of robotics and embedded artificial intelligence.
The program emphasizes innovation, teamwork, and practical problem-solving. Each semester features a combination of individual and team projects, allowing students to develop both independent problem-solving skills and collaborative expertise: the first semester focuses on design thinking and innovation, the second semester highlights system realization and evaluation, and the third semester is dedicated to an independent research project, conducted in partnership with industry or within the university's robotics research group. These projects ensure that students gain hands-on experience applying advanced theories and methodologies in robotics.
The MSc program leverages Maynooth University's strong foundation in Computer Science and Robotics and Intelligent Devices undergraduate programs. Many advanced modules from these programs are included, along with specialized topics such as deep learning, augmented reality, human-robot interaction, robotics ethics, and cognitive robotics.
Students from diverse academic backgrounds can benefit from tailored pathways:
- Computing graduates will gain an understanding of engineering principles, including control theory, robotics, and digital signal processing.
- Engineering or robotics graduates will focus on advanced computing topics, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Graduates will emerge with a comprehensive understanding of robotics and embedded AI, grounded in cutting-edge theory and research. They will also develop transferable skills in design thinking, teamwork, and innovation, demonstrated through their completion of a research project addressing real-world challenges. This program prepares students for impactful careers in industries ranging from technology and healthcare to agriculture and advanced manufacturing.
Candidates should have a minimum 2.1 grade honours (level 8) degree in a cognate discipline such as engineering, computer science, physics or maths or their international equivalent.
Candidates with a minimum 2.2 grade honours (level 8) degree in any discipline who can demonstrate at least five years of experience in software, embedded systems, or firmware development will also be considered.
In exceptional circumstances, consideration will be given to candidates who do not hold a primary degree but have at least 10 years of relevant work experience in a software development, embedded systems or firmware role.
Candidates will provide evidence of proficiency in a high-level computer language of their choice.
Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
