Maynooth University Faculty of Science and Engineering is delighted to congratulate Hannah Bagtasos on being awarded a prestigious ‘Generation Google Scholarship: for women in computer science in Ireland’. Hannah is a third year BSc Computer Science and Software Engineering student at Maynooth University.
The 'Generation Google Scholarship: for women in computer science' was established to help students pursuing computer science degrees excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive a €5,000 award (which can vary, depending on location and local equivalent) for the 2023-2024 academic year. This scholarship is awarded based on the strength of each candidate's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, demonstrated leadership, and academic performance.
There are many professional development opportunities for students that come with this scholarship award. Hannah has attended a CV workshop and has regular meetings with her dedicated Google mentor for industry advice as well as regular mock interviews to practice her interview skills. These are fantastic opportunities for Hannah to network with professionals in industry and pursue her academic and professional goals with the support of one of the top tech companies in the world, while completing her undergraduate studies at Maynooth University.
Hannah’s advice for anyone interested in applying for this scholarship is:
"Be an opportunist, try everything. I feel like sometimes we're too scared to apply for ambitious things. But if you never try, you'll never know. If you've displayed leadership skills or been giving your degree your full 100% best, you should definitely apply. This is your chance to be able to talk about the things you love in computer science and/or display the achievements you've succeeded so far. A little push goes a long way so take the first step. Go in with the mindset that you can do this.
Take your time on your applications, focus on how you demonstrated your leadership or academic skills. As well as your impact on diversity. Make sure to get your CV and essays proofread."
Hannah was invited to Google’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) headquarters in Dublin to receive her scholarship certificate in October 2023 (pictured).
Speaking about Hannah’s Google Scholarship, Dr John Keating, Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Maynooth University, says:
