Ballyfermot native, D’Andra Andrews, is a final year BSc Psychology student at Maynooth University. D’Andra reflects on life as a Psychology student and Student Ambassador.

“I applied to Maynooth University through the CAO in 2020. I put MU as one of my top choices for studying psychology when applying to the CAO, as it was one of the few colleges to offer a potential placement during the psychology degree.

I have been so happy with my choice and thoroughly enjoyed my time at Maynooth over the last four years. The course has been very interesting as we learn about human behaviour and the mind, as well as how to conduct psychological research. This has helped me to gain a summer research internship within the University with an environmental psychologist, where I had the opportunity to help conduct and present research as well attend an environmental research conference in Malta.

Outside of coursework, I’ve also enjoyed taking part in clubs and societies and volunteering on campus. In my third year, I was the President of the Psychology Society.  This involved planning events that would be fun for Psychology students, such as psychology pub quizzes and paranormal psychology talks. I currently volunteer as an academic representative for my classmates and a student representative on committees within the Psychology Department such as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee as well as the Teaching and Learning Committee.

During my time at Maynooth I have been awarded a gold MUSE award for the research and involvement in campus life and have also been a finalist for the ‘Female Undergraduate of the Year’ Award. When I am not busy with coursework and volunteering, I work as a Student Ambassador, something I have been doing for the past year and which I really enjoy. As part of my role I host campus tours, create social media content, welcome guests to events such as the Open Days. I really enjoy helping prospective students to know more about what it is like to be Psychology student here at Maynooth University.”

The Student Ambassador Programme provides current Maynooth University students with the opportunity to provide information about their degree course, subjects, campus facilities and life at Maynooth University to prospective applicants, parents and guardians.
