Portarlington native, Rachel McGettrick is a final year BSc Psychology student at Maynooth University.

“As I approach the end of my undergraduate degree at Maynooth University, I look back with immense pride on my experience. My decision to apply to Maynooth was rooted in the University’s highly regarded BSc Psychology degree, which I have greatly enjoyed studying. This degree has presented me with lots of excellent opportunities and has contributed to my personal and academic development.

I recall my first day on campus - finding myself with a group of strangers who were just as nervous as I was. The warm reception from the Orientation Team and other students made us feel welcome. However, lockdown soon hit, and we were all faced with the unforeseen challenges of being confined to our laptop screens. In the face of the obstacles imposed by the online learning, I felt consistently guided and informed by my lecturers and the University, and successfully navigated through the challenges of my first year.

Once we returned to campus, I was determined to make the most of college life. This is where my engagement with the University started to grow. I joined the Student Ambassador Programme where I have proudly assisted prospective students for the past three years, offering insights into the academic and social community that defines the University. This role has been particularly gratifying, as it allows me to offer guidance to those navigating the same decision-making process that I once faced. This experience has not only connected me with other Ambassadors but has also refined my communication and leadership skills.

This past year, I've extended my contributions to campus atmosphere as a committee member of the Psychology Society. Beyond the lecture halls, the friends I have made during my time here have been an invaluable aspect of my university life. From those hard 9am classes to fun nights out, they have not only supported me but also served as a source of enjoyment and inspiration. These relationships, coupled with my multifaceted engagement with the University, encapsulate the value of my Maynooth experience.”

The Student Ambassador Programme provides current Maynooth University students with the opportunity to provide information about their degree course, subjects, campus facilities and life at Maynooth University to prospective applicants, parents and guardians.
