New Horizons and Challenges: LGBT Families and the Law

Dr Fergus Ryan speaks on the family at University of Limerick
Thursday, March 24, 2016 - 13:00

Dr Fergus Ryan addressed recent changes in the Constitution and the law that affect LGBT families and, in particular, analysed the Marriage Act 2015 and the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015.  He also addressed the implications of the Gender Recognition Act 2015 for transgender and intersex people.  He highlighted, moreover, the impact of the 2015 Marriage Referendum, noting that although the referendum expanded the right to marry, the constitutional definition of family remains confined to families based on marriage alone.

Dr Fergus Ryan lectures in Family Law on the Department's LLB programme and in Gender, Sexuality and the Law and Marriage and the Law on the LLM (Global Legal Studies) masters degree.
