Russell Library Huxley Summer Internship for Classics and Mathematics

The late Professor George Huxley (1932-2022) was a valued friend both to the academic departments of Ancient Classics and Mathematics and Statistics at Maynooth and to the Russell Library, to which he made significant donations and regularly described the library as our best kept secret. Professor Huxley was a world-renowned philologist and historian of the Ancient World. In a publishing career spanning over fifty years, he wrote hundreds of articles and reviews. He was an adjunct Professor in the departments of Classics and Mathematics and Statistics at Maynooth University, supporting student prizes in both departments.

For more than a decade, Professor Huxley delivered annual lectures to both departments, and these lectures would be the focus of this internship. Under the supervision of Dr Kieran McGroarty (Ancient Classics) and Dr Ciarán Mac an Bhaird (Mathematics and Statistics) the intern would be tasked with studying Professor Huxley's handwritten lecture notes and accompanying materials, and producing electronic transcriptions along with accompanying bibliographies. These outputs would provide an invaluable source for future postgraduate students and researchers within both Departments.
