Transition Year (TY) students from Celbridge Community School enjoyed a workshop with Dr Ciarán Mac an Bhaird in the Russell Library at the end of February. Following a history of the college and the library, students explored some of the significant scientific texts housed in the Russell Library. These included Copernicus's De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, Galiileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Newton's Principia, Fermat's Diophantus, and Briggs's Arithmetica Logarithmica. The students then studied propositions from multiple editions of Euclid's Elements, exploring how the way mathematics is written has changed dramaticallyy over several centuries. Students also proved the Pythagorean Theorem geometrically through the use of right angled triangles.
