At Maynooth University, we are committed to fostering a campus where mental health and well-being are prioritised, so that no one feels alone in their struggles. Our ‘Elephant in the Room’ sculpture is both a symbol and a reminder that mental health challenges are a part of life, and seeking support is a sign of strength. Through this sculpture and the resources it represents, we aim to send a clear message to our community: you are not alone, and support is always here for you.
The sculpture was painted by professional artist, Karolina Di Duca, based on artwork submissions received from MU staff and students around the themes of openness, compassion, inclusivity and support. A competition was then held to ‘name the elephant’ and the winning name was Hope.
We believe that ‘Hope’ perfectly captures the optimism, compassion, and courage at the heart of this mental health awareness initiative. Hope will now travel across campus, serving as a powerful reminder that no challenge is too small to seek support for, and that help is always available.
The Green Ribbon is an international symbol for mental health awareness. By wearing one, you show that you are open to having conversations about mental health.
Maynooth University strives to have an open, inclusive campus environment with no stigma or shame around mental health. Every year we celebrate the ‘See Change, Green Ribbon month’, and the video below highlights how across our many and varied departments there is an openness and respect for mental health.
We encourage everyone on campus to be an ambassador for this positive culture. You can pick up a free Green Ribbon all year round from the Healthy Campus office.
