Faculty of Arts and Humanities Teaching and Learning Committee

 

Terms of Reference

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities Teaching and Learning Committee is set up as an advisory body to the Faculty. Its role is to discuss matters concerning learning, teaching and the student experience that are pertinent to units within the Faculty. It will assist the Executive Dean in bringing proposals and recommendations that relate to educational matters to the general Faculty meetings. It will assist the Vice-President (Students & Learning) by bringing proposals and recommendations. It will also collaborate with the relevant Academic Council committees, and their counterparts in the other Faculties.
 
The specific remit of this Teaching and Learning Committee, reporting to and subject to oversight and review by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is to:

  1. Recommend specific actions to Faculty, the Executive Dean, the VP (Students & Learning), Academic Council and other University bodies, relating to teaching, learning, and the student experience within the Faculty;
  2. Promote excellence in teaching, learning and student success by sharing good practice and highlighting new initiatives;
  3. Review, propose and provide input to University decisions on policy and practices concerning teaching, learning, and the student experience, in support of, and informing the University Strategic Plan;
  4. Promote a collaborative approach to teaching, learning, and student success across the whole of the Faculty, supporting interdisciplinary and inter-faculty cooperation, as appropriate;
  5. Respond to, review, and communicate national and international teaching and learning policy agendas on behalf of the Faculty, where appropriate;
  6. Consider and disseminate updates from teams across the University regarding teaching, learning and student experience projects, including those that are externally funded;
  7. Review proposals from the Academic Council Academic Programme Committee, and other Academic Council sub-committees where appropriate, and provide feedback to that committee;
  8. Support staff development initiatives with regard to teaching and learning and the student experience;
  9. Advise the Faculty on the development of the teaching and learning environment (including the wider campus) for Faculty of Arts and Humanities students and staff, encompassing physical resources and technologies;
  10. Advise the Faculty on issues concerning student success, retention, and progression in the relevant disciplines and if necessary, recommend changes to marks and standards for consideration by the Faculty.

Membership

The Associate Dean (T&L) will Chair this committee.

  • Dean or Associate Dean (ex-officio).
  • VP (Students & Learning) (co-opted when appropriate).
  • VP (International) (co-opted when appropriate).
  • Each Department or Unit within the Faculty will be asked to nominate a maximum of two members.
  • Other members may be co-opted from the Faculty’s technical staff, student representatives, or from CTL, Library, or other University units and portfolios, as appropriate.

The term of the committee will be three years. Members should normally serve on this committee for no more than six consecutive years.

Composition of this committee should be gender balanced (minimum 40% women and minimum 40% men) and strive to reflect the diversity of the community we serve. Co-options by the Chair should also bear this in mind, as well as the need for student representation.
