What is eduroam?
https://www.eduroam.ie/
eduroam is a Wi-Fi service available to third-level students and staff from institutions participating in the eduroam wireless program.
You will need a valid Maynooth University logon account to use the service.
A configuration tool can be found here: https://cat.eduroam.org/
- If you are manually configuring your client you will also need to identify your home institution.
- For example, a Maynooth University user should enter <username>@mu.ie as their user name and then enter their Maynooth University password.
- Please note the username is not your email address, just your normal username with your institution's realm appended.
See http://www.eduroam.org/ for more information. If this is of interest to you please contact Service Desk for additional wireless technical information.
A new eduroam Companion App has been released for Android and iOS, to help you discover more about and navigate to venues that offer eduroam connectivity. To get this app, click here.
- If your mobile device runs Android 8 or later, first install the geteduroam app from the Play Store.
- For earlier versions of Android and for all other mobile phones, install the eduroam CAT app instead for this step, and then proceed with the remaining steps below. Do not uninstall the geteduroam app (or the eduroam CAT app, if that is used) later, as this will break the ability of the device to use eduroam WiFi.
- Open a web browser on the mobile device (Note: If using an Apple device, you must use the Safari web browser for this)
- Browse to https://cat.eduroam.org/
- Click on “Click here to download your eduroam installer" and follow the instructions. When prompted, enter your username and password. A Maynooth University user should enter <username>@mu.ie as their user name and then enter their Maynooth University password. Please note <username> is not your email address, just your username with the institution's realm appended, e.g. [email protected].
How do I find out which Android version is on my device?
This may vary from one device to the next but in general:
- Open the Settings app on your device
- Select 'About Phone' or 'About Device'
- Select 'Software information' and the 'Android version' should be listed on this screen.
MU-Guest Wi-Fi
The MU-Guest Wi-Fi SSID connects you to an open (unencrypted) Wi-Fi network which allows access to some local resources without the need to authenticate.
- Restricted services: http, https, SSL-VPN(443).
- Email clients (Thunderbird, Outlook) will not work on this network.
- Unsecured network - no default data encryption.
- Access to MU-Guest Wi-Fi may be restricted.
We recommend using the eduroam SSID.
We will do our best to resolve all Wi-Fi issues. Unfortunately, as for all services, certain policies and regulations need to be in place to make the process for everybody as transparent as possible. For this reason, we ask that you make yourself familiar with the following regulations:
- Your computer must meet the minimum specification to connect to the Maynooth University network.
- While other problems such as hardware issues or operating system erros may be identified during the troubleshooting process, these will not be addressed by the staff of IT Services.
- The decision when to stop troubleshooting or that the equipment is not suitable in the first place lies solely with the staff of IT Services.
- IT Services cannot accept responsibility for damage to property, intellectual or otherwise, either during the troubleshooting process or while users hardware is in the possession of IT Services
Game consoles and media streaming devices must be registered before connecting to the network.
Please note, this is not to be used for phones, laptops, PCs or Macs - connect via eduroam with those devices! Any such devices (phones, laptops or desktops) connected via this method will be removed.
This link will allow you to register your MAC address for access;

Login using your student number and password - please be sure to enter the WiFi mac address (not the ethernet one)
Outdoor wifi is now available in the green spaces between Hume building and the Arts Block. Signal strength is strong and can support hundreds of users. Simply continue to connect to eduroam (details of how to do so are available above in the 'eduroam Wi-Fi Network' section) and use your devices as before. The service and its coverage will expand in the near future, with further details to be confirmed.
