Dear colleagues,
As advised earlier, in light of the on-going cyberattack in the media, we have conducted a review of our internal IT systems to ensure that Maynooth University defences are up to date and continue to protect MU systems in the event of such an attack. Due to this, we identified a system that required an immediate update. This update was started today and will continue into tomorrow, Tuesday, 05-Nov-2024. The Registry Production Systems, which includes ITS Back Office, Student Web, Jasper Soft, Workbench, and Departmental Registry Reports will be unavailable during the following patching schedule.
- Registry PROD will be unavailable from 09:00 - 12:00 tomorrow, Tuesday 05-Nov-2024

17-06-2024 Maynooth University Student Account Deletion - July 26th, 2024
Maynooth University notes that you are no longer a registered student of the University, having completed your studies some time ago or not re-registering to your programme. As a result, your University IT account is now scheduled for deletion. This affects the following IT services which have been available to you:
Your user account
MU e-mail address including your Office 365 email and calendar
Personal network share (sometimes referred to as your 'x-drive') and Office 365 storage
Access to the Student Web portal (e.g. examination judgements)
Please be advised that these will be deleted on Friday, 26th July, 2024, which will result in the following:
You will no longer be able to access your MU account to log onto PCs, email or the Maynooth University network
All emails (and email forwards associated with your account) will be deleted
All data from your personal network share and Office 365 storage will be deleted
Moodle, StudentWeb and library access will be revoked
You should take the following actions:
Forward any emails that you wish to retain, to another account or save them as files
Save any files that you wish to retain from your personal network share to a secure file store or device, meaning any assignments, theses or related data should be downloaded from your account, from Moodle or from StudentWeb.
In the event that you are receiving this email in error and you are currently a registered student with Maynooth University, please contact [email protected] providing information of your relationship with the University. If you register during the deletion period (17th June-26th July) your account will not be deleted, and no further action is required.

28-03-2024 IT Services Important Notice | Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Dear Colleague,
Maynooth University IT Services wish to advise you that the implementation of MFA Everywhere and the move to the more secure Microsoft Authenticator App will be enabled on the 18th of April 2024. From this date, you must authenticate via a secure MFA mechanism when accessing your MU email account and other MU services, both on and off campus.
If you are unable to use the Microsoft Authenticator App, please complete the request form on the MU Support Portal, via the following URL: MFA - Alternative Method of Authentication. This needs to be completed by end of day Tuesday 9th April to ensure your continued ability to use MFA.

Dear Colleague,
Student Print & Copy Service is now temporarily available on a reduced basis until our new Print & Copy Service becomes available later in the summer. Until then, student printing and copying is only availble in the Library and only from the computers on the ground floor, open plan area of the Library in front of the barriers and opposite Starbucks. Printing from other computers or privately owned computers is not available at this time.

05-04-2023 Changes to MyCard
The university is removing the electronic purse function from MyCard. This is part of a bigger project to change our Card management system. This means that in the future, it will no longer be used to make any payments on Maynooth Campus and we will be removing the Top up website capability for MyCard. We are advising all staff and students not to put significant amounts on your card and as a result we have limited the amount you can currently top up to €5 only until May.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will this happen?
The purse feature will be removed at the end of May 2023, after the summer exams have finished. From June onwards, it will no longer work for any payments on campus.
Will I need to change my card?
No, your current card will function as normal. It will continue to work in the library & for building access where appropriate.
How will students pay for printing?
Availability of Student Print will continue uninterrupted during the transition to the new Card Management System and/or transition to the new Student Print Service
How will I pay for the crèche?
The crèche will provide a point-of-sale terminal for making payments with your bank card.
How will I pay for Library fees?
The Library will provide a point-of-sale terminal for making payments with your bank card.
Will I get my money back?
Maynooth university is providing a refund capability. The new refund policy information is available here https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/bursar/my-card

23-03-2023 Security Enhancement for Microsoft MFA Update
Dear colleagues
Further to previous communications regarding strengthening security on the Microsoft ‘Authenticator’ app used for MFA. The ‘Number Matching’ feature was expected to be implemented on 27th of February, however Microsoft slightly delayed that date. The number matching security feature on the Authenticator app should now be deployed from Monday 27th March.

22-02-2023 Security Enhancement For Microsoft MFA February 2023
Dear Colleagues
- From 27th of February, Microsoft will be introducing security enhancements called ‘Number Matching’ and ‘GPS location’ to their Authenticator app.
- This means that from 27th of February, if you use the MS Authenticator app to sign into your MU account, as well as clicking ‘Approve’ on the app to sign in, you will also be asked to enter a numeric code that will appear on the device you are trying to sign into your MU account on, or you will be asked to confirm you are in the location shown on the map that will appear on your screen.
- If you do not use the MS Authenticator app to sign into your MU account and instead receive an sms text message or phone call, you will not avail of the extra security enhancements.
- IT Services recommends using the MS Authenticator app for MFA with the enhanced security features as well as ensuring that the app is updated regularly.

02-09-2022 Eduroam service – security update
Colleagues,
The eduroam wifi service will be updated on Friday, the 9th of September.
If you experience any difficulty reconnecting to wireless, please visit https://cat.eduroam.org and download the latest client by choosing “Click here to download your eduroam installer”. Then choose “Maynooth University” in the list of institutions and click to download the software. Once this is done, run the installer – please note, when prompted for your password, provide your username (e.g., jbloggs) and not your email address.
It is recommended that all staff, affiliates, and registered students of both Maynooth University and SPCM use eduroam, as this will facilitate secure connection to all necessary services.

27-07-2022 Macs in Intune FAQ
What is Microsoft Intune?
Microsoft Intune is a tool we use in IT Services to help us remotely manage and look after some aspects of IT Security for example, it allows us to push out profiles and ensure devices are encrypted and up to date with their operating system.
All new MacBooks and iMacs purchased now are automatically added to Intune with the help of our Apple supplier – ‘Select’ and so do not need to be added again.
Why are IT Services adding Macs to Intune?
In accordance with Maynooth University IT Security requirements, all devices connecting to the MU networks must be kept up to date and appropriately secured. At the moment, some of our older Macs are using ‘McAfee Virus Scan’ software to help protect their Macs from viruses. However, our licence agreement with McAfee is due to expire in September 2022 and will not be extended. Instead, the university has switched Mac protection to ‘Microsoft Defender’ which we can push out to Macs connected to the MU networks using Intune. This will also keep in line with our Windows computers and newer Macs that already have ‘Microsoft Defender’ installed on them.
How to get Macs into Intune?
Populating Intune with our Macs will require some work and time but is possible. To help us get as many Macs as we can into Intune, we are asking Mac users to back up their data from their Macs and then arrange an appointment to drop their Mac over to IT Services. IT Services will then wipe the hard drive of the Mac add it to Intune and then re-install the operating system and return the device.
To help us with this we are asking if departments can let us know the following information regarding the MU purchased Macs (not personally owned devices) in your department please:
- Mac Model (e.g. MacBook Air, iMac 27”)
- Serial number of Mac
- Operating System on Mac (if known)
- Name of the person using the Mac
- Age of Mac (if known)
When we have that information, we can begin to contact Mac users to arrange an appointment for them to drop their Macs into us.
Does this include all MU purchased Macs?
This will impact all MU purchased Macs that were purchased from our current Apple supplier – Select (previously called CompuB), and Macs that are running OS 10.11 or newer.
What if my Mac is running an OS older than 10.11?
Try to update the OS on your Mac to a more recent version. If you are unsure how to do this – click on the apple logo on the top left hand side of your screen, select ‘About This Mac’ and then click on ‘Software Update…’
My Mac is new-ish how do I know if it needs to be brought to IT Services?
If you’re unsure if your new Mac is already in Intune, you can check in the ‘System Preferences’ of your Mac, then ‘Profiles’ and see if it says at the bottom of the window ‘This Mac is supervised and managed by Maynooth University’
How to I backup my Data?
For backing up data, we recommend copying everything over to MS OneDrive. Everyone should have access to OneDrive as part of their Microsoft Office 365 account. Download the OneDrive app or login from your browser at this address: portal.office.com
Data already stored in Office 365 apps like Outlook 365 email or Teams will not need to be copied again. If you’re unsure how to back-up your files, please click this link for more information.

26-05-2022 Peach - Service decommissioning
Colleagues,
The on-campus file share service (Peach) hosting departmental and user file shares has been in operation for over 20 years. This service has now been superseded by Teams and OneDrive.
Since 29th October 2021, Peach has been in read-only mode. This means it has not been possible to save new files or data to any file share since that date.
Peach will be removed from service on Tuesday 30th August 2022 after which date file shares and mapped network drives will no longer be accessible.

11-03-2022 MU Guest Wi-Fi service, Monday 21st March
Dear colleagues,
To ensure the continued performance and availability of Wi-Fi, the MU-Guest network will be changed from Monday 21st March, to ask guests to connect via their browser. This means that devices will no longer auto-connect to this network.
For staff and students, the eduroam Wi-Fi network is recommended and will facilitate secure connection to all necessary services.
Once properly connected, your client should automatically join eduroam wherever it is broadcast - on-campus, indoors and out, on other 3rd level campuses , and even on some bus services!

25-02-2022 Live Issue: Targeted Spear Phishing Campaign
Dear Colleagues,
IT Services are aware that emails are being received today from those masquerading as others in the University. This is a targeted spear phishing campaign, whereby criminals pose as a trusted source to convince their targets to divulge confidential data, personal information, or other sensitive data.

We continue to experience an authentication issue across some services on Active Directory. IT Services are investigating this issue as a priority and we have also escalated a priority 1 ticket with our support vendor. A further update will be provided in the morning.

10-01-2022 Service Authentication Issues
Dear Colleague,
Due to an authentication issue across some services on Active Directory, Maynooth University has suffered the loss of the following services:
- Workbench
- Various VPNs for remote working
- Past Exam Papers
- Academic Database
- Off campus access to Library Resources
- IT Service Desk (Portal only – IT Services can still be reached via email and phone)
IT Services are continuing to monitor systems that might be affected.
The issue was reported initially at approximately 9.30 am Monday 10 January 2022,
We cannot give an expected timeframe for restoration of services.
IT Services Staff are currently working to evaluate the extent of the disruption and the length of time needed to effect a recovery of service.
We will give further updates every 2 hours.
